Al-Qamar: 43–46

{أكفاركم خير من أولئكم} O people of Mecca, are your disbelievers better than those disbelievers previously mentioned: the people of Noah, Hud, Salih, Lot, and the family of Pharaoh? That is: are they superior in strength, equipment, and status in this world? Or are they less in disbelief and stubbornness? The meaning is: your disbelievers are like those, or even worse than them.

{أم لكم براءة في الزبر} Or has a "clearance" (immunity) been sent down to you, O people of Mecca, in the preceding scriptures, stating that whoever among you disbelieves and denies the messengers is safe from the punishment of God, such that you feel secure through that clearance?

{نحن جميع منتصر} We are a collective group, our command is united, and we are "victorious" (invincible)—we cannot be harmed or oppressed. It is narrated that Abu Jahl struck his horse on the day of Badr, advanced to the front of the ranks, and said, "We shall be victorious today over Muhammad and his companions," so this was revealed:

{سيهزم الجمع ويولون الدبر} Regarding this, Ikrimah said: When this verse was revealed, Umar said, "Which group will be defeated?" When he saw the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) leaping into his armor and saying, "The group will be defeated," he understood its interpretation. "And they will turn their backs" (i.e., their rears).

{بل الساعة موعدهم والساعة أدهى وأمر} "More calamitous" (i.e., more severe and horrific). A dahiya (calamity) is an abominable matter for which no remedy can be found. "And more bitter" (i.e., than defeat, killing, and captivity). It is also recited as: Sanahzimu al-jam' (We shall defeat the group).

{إن المجرمين في ضلال وسعر * يوم يسحبون في النار على وجوههم ذوقوا مس سقر * إنا كل شيء خلقناه بقدر * وما أمرنا إلا واحدة كلمح بالبصر}
