Ar-Raḥmān: 26

{كُلُّ مَنْ عَلَيْهَا فَانٍ * وَيَبْقَىٰ وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ}

{عَلَيْهَا}: Upon the earth.

{وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ}: His Essence (Dhāt). The "Face" is an expression used to denote the whole and the essence. The poor of Mecca would say: "Where is a noble Arab face (i.e., a person) to save me from humiliation?"

{ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ}: An attribute of the "Face."

  • 'Abd Allāh (Ibn Mas'ūd) recited it as: {ذِي} (Dhi), as an attribute of "Your Lord" (Rabbika).
  • Its meaning: He whom the monotheists exalt above being likened to His creation or their actions. Or, He to whom it is said: "How majestic and generous You are!" Or, He from whom majesty and generosity come to the sincere among His servants.

This attribute is among the greatest attributes of Allah. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

  • "Persist (Alẓū) with: 'O Possessor of Majesty and Generosity' (Yā Dhā al-Jalāli wa-l-Ikrām)."
  • He (ﷺ) passed by a man praying and saying: "O Possessor of Majesty and Generosity," and said: "It has been answered for you."

If you ask: What is the blessing in this? I say: It is the greatest blessing, which is the arrival of the time of recompense immediately following that.

{يَسْأَلُهُ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ ۚ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ هُوَ فِي شَأْنٍ * فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ}
