Surah Ar-Rahman 55:34

ﲣ ﲤ ﲥ ﲦ

So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?

Ar-Raḥmān: 33–36

{O company of jinn and mankind} This is like an interpretation of His saying: "O you two heavy ones" (al-thaqalān).

{If you are able} To flee from My decree, to exit My dominion, or to escape My heavens and My earth, then do so. Then He said: You will not be able to penetrate {except by authority}, meaning by power, force, and dominance. And how could you have that? It is similar to: {And you will not cause failure [to Allah] upon the earth or in the heaven} (al-ʿAnkabūt: 22).

It is narrated that the angels, peace be upon them, will descend and surround all of creation. When the jinn and mankind see them, they will flee, but they will not turn in any direction without finding the angels surrounding it.

{A flame (shuwāẓ) and a smoke (nuḥās)} Both words have been recited with the ḍamma (u) and the kasra (i).

  • Shuwāẓ: The pure flame.
  • Nuḥās: Smoke. It is cited in poetry: "It shines like the light of an oil lamp, in which God has placed no smoke (nuḥās)."
  • It is also said: It is molten copper poured upon their heads.
  • Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them) said: When they emerge from their graves, a flame will drive them toward the place of gathering.
  • It has been recited as nuḥāsun (nominative), as a conjunction to shuwāẓun.
  • It has been recited as nuḥāsin (genitive), as a conjunction to nārin.
  • It has been recited as nuḥasun, the plural of nuḥās (smoke), like liḥāf and luḥuf.
  • It has been recited as naḥsun, meaning: "We will kill [you] with torment."
  • It has been recited as: "We will send upon you a flame of fire and smoke."

{Then you will not defend yourselves} Meaning: You will not be able to prevent it.


{And when the heaven splits open and becomes rose-colored like oil} {So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?} {Then on that Day, none will be asked about his sin among mankind or jinn} {So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?}
