Tafsir of Ar-Rahman 55:41-45

Al-Dahhak said: Their forelocks are gathered to their feet in a chain behind their backs.

It is also said: The angels drag them, sometimes seizing them by the forelocks and sometimes by the feet.

Meaning: Water so hot that its heat and boiling have reached their peak.

Interpretation: They are punished by alternating between being scorched by the Fire and drinking the Hamim (scalding water).

It is said: When they cry out for relief from the Fire, their relief is provided in the form of this Hamim.

It is also said: It is a valley in Hell where the pus of the people of Hell collects. They are led there in chains and plunged into it until their joints are dislocated, then they are brought out, and Allah creates them anew.

Readings: It is read as yatūfūna (they circulate).

In the reading of Abdullah (ibn Mas'ud): "This is Hell which you both used to deny; you shall burn in it, neither dying in it nor living; they circulate between it and the Hamim."

The Grace of Allah: In mentioning the terror of this punishment, there is the salvation of the one who is saved by His mercy and bounty, and the kindness inherent in the warning against it.
