Verse range: 55:56
{In them} In these enumerated blessings: the two gardens, the springs, the fruits, the couches, and the harvested fruit. Or, it refers to the two gardens, due to their inclusion of places, palaces, and sitting areas.
{Those who restrain their glances} Women who have restricted their gaze to their husbands; they do not look at anyone else.
{Neither human nor jinn has touched them before them} No human has touched the human women among them, and no jinn has touched the jinn women among them. This is evidence that jinn engage in sexual intercourse just as humans do. It is also recited as lam yaṭmithhunna (with a damma on the mīm).
It is said: They are in the clarity of ruby, the whiteness of coral, and the brilliance of pearls—even more radiant in whiteness. It is said that the ḥūr (wide-eyed maiden) wears seventy garments, yet the marrow of her shin is visible from behind them, just as red wine is seen through a white glass bottle.
{Is the reward for good} In deeds.
{Anything but good} In reward.
Regarding this, Muhammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah said: "It is a general rule for the righteous and the wicked." Meaning: it is universal; whoever does good, good is done to him, and whoever does evil, evil is done to him.
{And below them are two [other] gardens. So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? Dark green [in color]. So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? In them are two springs, gushing forth. So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? In them are fruit, palm trees, and pomegranates. So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?}
