Tafsir
Verse range: 56:71
{أفرأيتم النار التي تورون} You strike it and extract it from the zinād (fire-sticks). The Arabs strike fire using two sticks, rubbing one against the other. They call the upper one the zand and the lower one the zandah, likening them to a male and a female.
{أأنتم أنشأتم شجرتها} The tree from which these fire-sticks are derived.
{تذكرة} A reminder of the Fire of Hell. We have attached all the means of livelihood to it, and we have made the need for it a universal trial, so that it may be present for people to see and be reminded of what they have been threatened with. Or, We have made it a reminder and a sample of Hell, based on what is narrated from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): "This fire of yours, which the children of Adam kindle, is one part out of seventy parts of the heat of Hell."
{ومتاعا للمقوين} A benefit for those who dwell in the qiwā, which is the wilderness. Or, for those whose stomachs or provisions are empty of food. It is said: "I have become aqwaytu (destitute/hungry) for days," meaning I have not eaten anything.
{فسبح باسم ربك العظيم} Perform tasbīḥ (glorification) by mentioning the name of your Lord. Or, he intended by "the name" the mention itself, meaning: by the mention of your Lord. "The Great" is an adjective for either the possessor (rabb) or the possessed (ism).
The meaning is: Since He mentioned what indicates His power and His favor upon His servants, He said: Perform tasbīḥ, which is to say "Subḥān Allāh" (Glory be to Allah). This is either to declare Him free from what the wrongdoers say—those who deny His oneness and disbelieve in His favor—or in astonishment at their behavior in belittling His manifest blessings and bounties, or as gratitude to Allah for the blessings He enumerated and drew attention to.
{فلا أقسم بمواقع النجوم * وإنه لقسم لو تعلمون عظيم * إنه لقرءان كريم * في كتاب مكنون * لا يمسه إلا المطهرون * تنزيل من رب العالمين}
