Al-Wāqiʿah: 81–82

{أفبهذا الحديث أنتم مدهنون} Meaning: Are you, regarding this discourse—the Qur’an—mudhinūn (negligent/complacent)? It is like one who is "greasing" (softening) a matter, meaning he is lax about it and does not stand firm, out of negligence.

{وتجعلون رزقكم أنكم تكذبون} This contains an ellipsis of a genitive noun (muḍāf). It means: "And you make the gratitude for your provision to be denial." That is, you have placed denial in the position of gratitude.

  • Variant Reading: Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) read it as: wa-tajʿalūna shukrakum annakum tukadhdhibūn (And you make your gratitude to be that you deny). It is said this was the reading of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). The meaning is: You make your gratitude for the blessing of the Qur’an to be that you deny it.
  • Another Interpretation: It was revealed regarding the Anwāʾ (the stations of the stars) and attributing rain to them. "Provision" (rizq) here refers to rain. It means: You make the gratitude for the rain that Allah provides you to be that you deny it comes from Allah, as you attribute it to the stars.
  • Regarding the reading tukadhdhibūn (you deny): This refers to their saying about the Qur’an that it is poetry, magic, or fabrication; and about the rain, that it comes from the Anwāʾ. Furthermore, everyone who denies the truth is a liar (kādhib).

Al-Wāqiʿah: 83–96

{فلولا إذا بلغت الحلقوم * وأنتم حينئذ تنظرون * ونحن أقرب إليه منكم ولكن لا تبصرون * فلولا إن كنتم غير مدينين * ترجعونها إن كنتم صادقين * فأما إن كان من المقربين * فروح وريحان وجنات نعيم * وأما إن كان من أصحاب اليمين * فسلام لك من أصحاب اليمين * وأما إن كان من المكذبين الضالين * فنزل من حميم * وتصلية جحيم * إن هذا لهو حق اليقين * فسبح باسم ربك العظيم}
