And those who have believed in Allah and His messengers - those are [in the ranks of] the supporters of truth and the martyrs, with their Lord. For them is their reward and their light. But those who have disbelieved and denied Our verses - those are the companions of Hellfire.

Al-Hadid: (19) "And those who believed in Allah..."

[Interpretation] He intends that those who believe in Allah and His messengers are, in the sight of Allah, in the rank of the Siddiqin (the truthful/upright) and the Shuhada (the martyrs). They are those who were foremost in belief and were martyred in the cause of Allah.

{For them is their reward and their light} Meaning: Like the reward of the Siddiqin and the Shuhada, and like their light.

[Question] If you ask: How can He equate them in reward when there must be a difference [in rank]?

[Answer] I say: The meaning is that Allah gives the believers their reward and multiplies it for them by His grace, until their reward—with its multiplication—equals the reward of those [the Siddiqin and Shuhada]. It is also permissible that {and the martyrs} is a subject (mubtada’), and {for them is their reward} is its predicate (khabar).

(20) "Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children—like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion."
