Al-Hashr: 8

{لِلْفُقَرَاءِ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ} "For the poor emigrants..."

Exegesis: The phrase "for the poor" (lil-fuqarā’) is a substitute (badal) for the previous mention of "the kindred" (dhī al-qurbā) and what is conjoined to it.

It is not a substitute for "for Allah and for the Messenger" (li-llāhi wa-li-r-rasūli) or what is conjoined to them, even if the meaning might suggest otherwise. This is because:

  1. It is inappropriate to describe the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as "poor" in the context of the verse "and they support Allah and His Messenger."
  2. One must refrain from applying the term "poor" to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) out of reverence.
  3. To treat it as a substitute based on the literal wording would contradict the duty of glorifying Allah (the Almighty and Majestic).

{أُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الصَّادِقُونَ} "Those are the truthful..." ...in their faith and their striving (jihād).

Al-Hashr: 9

{وَالَّذِينَ تَبَوَّءُوا الدَّارَ وَالْإِيمَانَ مِن قَبْلِهِمْ يُحِبُّونَ مَنْ هَاجَرَ إِلَيْهِمْ وَلَا يَجِدُونَ فِي صُدُورِهِمْ حَاجَةً مِّمَّا أُوتُوا وَيُؤْثِرُونَ عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ وَلَوْ كَانَ بِهِمْ خَصَاصَةٌ ۚ وَمَن يُوقَ شُحَّ نَفْسِهِ فَأُولَٰئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ}

"And [also] for those who were settled in the home [of Medina] and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what they [the emigrants] were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful."
