Al-An'am: 121
"And it is indeed an act of disobedience (fisq)."
The pronoun refers to the verbal noun (masdar) of the verb upon which the prohibition has entered; meaning: "And eating from it is indeed an act of disobedience." Alternatively, it refers to the relative pronoun (ma), meaning: "And the eating of it is an act of disobedience," or it designates that upon which the name of Allah has not been mentioned as being, in itself, an act of disobedience.
If you ask: A group of jurists (mujtahidin) have held the view that it is permissible to eat that upon which the name of Allah has not been mentioned, whether out of forgetfulness or intentionally.
I reply: They have interpreted this [verse] as referring to carrion (maytah) or that upon which a name other than Allah’s has been mentioned, as in His saying: "Or a wicked offering (fisq) dedicated to other than Allah" (Al-An'am: 145).
"They will inspire (yūḥūna)"
Meaning: They will incite.
"Their allies"
From among the polytheists.
"To dispute with you"
By saying: "Do not eat from what Allah has killed [i.e., died naturally]." It is through this that the interpretation of those who understood it as referring to carrion returns.
"You would then be polytheists"
Because whoever follows other than Allah, the Exalted, in his religion has committed polytheism (shirk) against Him. It is the duty of one with insight into his religion not to eat from that upon which the name of Allah has not been mentioned, under any circumstances, due to the severe emphasis seen in the verse. This is despite Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy on him) granting a concession in cases of forgetfulness—though not intentional acts—and Malik and Al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on them) granting it in both cases.
"Is one who was dead and We gave him life, and provided him with a light by which he walks among the people, like one who is in darkness, never to emerge from it? Thus, it has been made fair-seeming to the disbelievers what they used to do. And thus We have placed in every city the greatest of its criminals to plot therein; but they plot not except against themselves, and they perceive it not."
