Tafsir of Al-An'am 6:125-126

Surah Al-An'am 6:125

ﱁ ﱂ ﱃ ﱄ ﱅ ﱆ ﱇ ﱈ ﱉ ﱊ ﱋ ﱌ ﱍ ﱎ ﱏ ﱐ ﱑ ﱒ ﱓ ﱔ ﱕ ﱖ ﱗ ﱘ ﱙ ﱚ ﱛ ﱜ ﱝ ﱞ

So whoever Allah wants to guide - He expands his breast to [contain] Islam; and whoever He wants to misguide - He makes his breast tight and constricted as though he were climbing into the sky. Thus does Allah place defilement upon those who do not believe.

Al-An'am: 125–126

{So whoever Allah wants to guide} He intends to show him kindness (lutf). He does not intend to show kindness except to one who is receptive to it.

{He expands his breast for Islam} He treats him with kindness until he desires Islam, his soul finds tranquility in it, and he loves to enter it.

{And whoever He wants to lead astray} He intends to abandon him and leave him to his own devices; this is the one for whom there is no kindness.

{He makes his breast tight and constricted} He withholds His kindness from him until his heart hardens, recoils from accepting the truth, and becomes blocked so that faith cannot enter it.

  • Note on readings: It is read as ḍayyiqan (light) and ḍayyiqan (heavy). Ḥarajan is read with a kasra (noun) and ḥarajan with a fatḥa (adjective derived from the verbal noun).

{As if he were climbing into the sky} As if he were attempting something impossible. For climbing into the sky is a metaphor for that which is unattainable, beyond one's capacity, and too difficult for one's ability.

  • Note on readings: It is read as yaṣṣaʿʿadu (originally yatasāʿadu), yasaʿʿadu, and yuṣāʿidu.

{Allah places the Rijs (abomination) upon those who do not believe} Meaning abandonment and the withholding of divine success (tawfiq). He describes it with the opposite of what tawfiq is described with, which is "purity." Or, He intends the action that leads to rijs—which is punishment—derived from irtijās (agitation/turmoil).

{And this is the path of your Lord} This is His way, which wisdom and His custom regarding tawfiq and abandonment dictate.

{Straight} Just, consistent, and uniform. Its accusative case serves as a confirming state (ḥāl), like His saying: {It is the truth, confirming} (Al-Baqarah: 91).

{For them} For a people who remember.

{Is the Abode of Peace} The abode of Allah, meaning Paradise. He attributed it to Himself to glorify it, or it is the abode of safety from every affliction and impurity.

{With their Lord} Under His guarantee, just as you say, "So-and-so has a right with me that will not be forgotten." Or, it is a treasure for them whose essence they do not know, as in His saying: {No soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes} (As-Sajdah: 17).

{And He is their Guardian} Their Master, their Beloved, or their Helper against their enemies.

{Because of what they used to do} On account of their deeds, or He is their Guardian by rewarding them for what they used to do.


{And [mention] the Day when He will gather them together [and say], "O company of jinn, you have misled many of mankind." And their allies among mankind will say, "Our Lord, we enjoyed one another, and we have reached our term, which You appointed for us." [Allah] will say, "The Fire is your residence, wherein you will abide eternally, except for what Allah wills. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing."}
