And the polytheists assign to Allah from that which He created of crops and livestock a share and say, "This is for Allah," by their claim, "and this is for our partners [associated with Him]." But what is for their "partners" does not reach Allah, while what is for Allah - this reaches their "partners." Evil is that which they rule.
Tafsir
Verse range: 6:136
"And they assigned to Allah from that which He created..."
They used to designate certain things from their crops and livestock for Allah, and other things for their idols. If they saw that what they had assigned to Allah was flourishing, growing, and increasing in goodness, they would take it back and assign it to their idols. But if what they had assigned to the idols flourished, they would leave it for them, excusing themselves by saying that Allah is Self-Sufficient. This was merely due to their love for their idols and their preference for them.
His saying, "from that which He created" (mimma dhara’a), implies that Allah was more deserving of having the flourishing portion assigned to Him, because He is the One who created it and caused it to flourish. It should not be diverted to that which is incapable of creation or causing growth.
"By their claim" (bi-za’mihim): It is also read with a damma (zu’mihim). It means they claimed it was for Allah, while Allah did not command them to do so, nor did He legislate for them that division, which is an act of polytheism (shirk), because they associated their idols with Allah in their offerings.
"It does not reach Allah": That is, it does not reach the channels they used to spend it on, such as hosting guests or giving charity to the poor.
"But it reaches their partners": By spending it on them through slaughtering sacrifices at their altars, providing for their caretakers, and the like.
"Evil is that which they judge": In preferring their idols over Allah the Exalted and doing what He did not legislate for them.
"And likewise, their 'partners' have made pleasing to many of the polytheists the killing of their children in order to bring about their destruction and to cover them with confusion in their religion. But if Allah had willed, they would not have done so. So leave them and that which they fabricate."
