Surah Al-An'am 6:145

ﲉ ﲊ ﲋ ﲌ ﲍ ﲎ ﲏ ﲐ ﲑ ﲒ ﲓ ﲔ ﲕ ﲖ ﲗ ﲘ ﲙ ﲚ ﲛ ﲜ ﲝ ﲞ ﲟ ﲠ ﲡ ﲢ ﲣ ﲤ ﲥ ﲦ ﲧ ﲨ ﲩ ﲪ ﲫ ﲬ ﲭ ﲮ ﲯ ﲰ

Say, "I do not find within that which was revealed to me [anything] forbidden to one who would eat it unless it be a dead animal or blood spilled out or the flesh of swine - for indeed, it is impure - or it be [that slaughtered in] disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit], then indeed, your Lord is Forgiving and Merciful."

Al-An'am: 145

"Say, I do not find..."

If you ask: How is it that the items being enumerated were separated, rather than listed consecutively?

I say: A separation occurred between them as an i'tirad (parenthetical clause) that is not foreign to the subject matter. God, the Almighty and Majestic, bestowed favor upon His servants by creating livestock for their benefit and permitting them. He then interposed an argument against those who forbade them. This argument against those who forbade them serves to confirm and reinforce the permission. Parenthetical clauses in speech are only employed for the sake of emphasis.

{ In what has been revealed to me } A reminder that prohibition is only established through the revelation of God Almighty and His law, not by the whims of the soul.

{ Forbidden } Meaning: a forbidden food among the foods you have prohibited.

{ Except that it be carrion } Except that the forbidden thing be carrion.

{ Or blood poured forth } Meaning: flowing and liquid, like the blood in the veins, not like the liver or the spleen. Permission has been granted for the blood remaining in the veins after slaughter.

{ Or a sin (fisq) } Conjoined to the accusative preceding it. He called that which was dedicated to other than God a "sin" because it is deeply rooted in the category of transgression. From this is His saying: "And do not eat of that upon which the name of God has not been mentioned, for indeed, it is a sin" (Al-An'am: 121).

{ Dedicated (uhilla) } An adjective for it, in the accusative case. It is also permissible for it to be a maf'ul lahu (causative object) from the verb ahalla, meaning: "dedicated to other than God as a sin."

If you ask: Upon what is uhilla conjoined, and to what does the pronoun in bihi (in it) refer according to this view?

I say: It is conjoined to yakun (to be), and the pronoun refers to the same thing that the hidden pronoun in yakun refers to.

{ But whoever is forced } Whoever is driven by necessity to eat something of these forbidden things.

{ Neither desiring } Against someone else in need, by refusing to share with them.

{ Nor transgressing } Exceeding the amount of his need in consuming it.

{ Then indeed, your Lord is Forgiving, Merciful } He will not hold him accountable.


{ And to those who are Jews, We prohibited every animal of undivided hoof; and of the cattle and the sheep, We prohibited to them their fat, except what adheres to their backs or the entrails or what is joined with bone. That We repaid them for their injustice, and indeed, We are truthful. Then if they deny you, say, "Your Lord is possessor of vast mercy, but His punishment cannot be repelled from the criminal people." }
