Tafsir of Al-An'am 6:155

{أن تقولوا} Out of aversion to your saying:

{على طائفتين} Meaning the people of the Torah and the people of the Gospel.

{وإن كنا} This is in (that) which is lightened from the heavy inna, and the lam is the one that distinguishes it from the negative in. The original structure is: "And that we were unaware of their study," with the ha being the pronoun of the state (dhamir al-sha'n).

{عن دراستهم} Regarding their reading; meaning: "We did not know of a study like theirs."

{لكنا أهدى منهم} Due to the sharpness of our minds, the penetration of our understanding, and the abundance of our memorization of the Days of the Arabs, their battles, their orations, their poetry, their rhymed prose, and their proverbs—even though we are unlettered (ummiyyun). It is also recited as an yaqulu (that they might say) or aw yaqulu (or they might say), with the ya.

{فقد جاءكم بينة من ربكم} A rebuke to them. This is more eloquent according to the reading of those who read yaqulu (they might say) in the third person, due to the shift (iltifat) it contains. The meaning is: "If you were truthful in what you claimed for yourselves, then a clear proof has indeed come to you from your Lord." The conditional clause is omitted, which is among the most excellent forms of omission.

{فمن أظلم ممن كذب بآيات الله} After having known their authenticity and truthfulness, or having had the ability to know that.

{وصدف عنها} He turned people away from them, so he went astray and led others astray.

{سنجزي الذين يصدفون عن آياتنا سوء العذاب} Similar to His saying: "Those who disbelieved and averted [others] from the way of Allah - We will increase them in punishment over [their] punishment" (An-Nahl: 88).

{هل ينظرون إلا أن تأتيهم الملائكة أو يأتى ربك أو يأتى بعض ءايات ربك يوم يأتى بعض ءايات ربك لا ينفع نفسا إيمانها لم تكن ءامنت من قبل أو كسبت فى إيمانها خيرا قل انتظروا إنا منتظرون}
