Tafsir
Verse range: 6:18
{وَهُوَ الْقَاهِرُ فَوْقَ عِبَادِهِ} A depiction of subjugation and loftiness through dominance and power, similar to His saying: {And indeed, we are dominant over them} (Al-A'raf: 127).
{قُلْ أَيُّ شَيْءٍ أَكْبَرُ شَهَادَةً} "Thing" (shay’) is the most general of general terms, as it applies to everything that can be known or spoken of. It encompasses the Eternal, physical bodies, accidents, the impossible, and the existent. Therefore, it is correct to say regarding Allah—Mighty and Majestic is He—that He is "a Thing, but not like other things," as if you said: "A known entity, but not like other known entities." However, it is not correct to say: "A body, but not like other bodies."
{قُلْ أَيُّ شَيْءٍ أَكْبَرُ شَهَادَةً ۖ قُلِ اللَّهُ ۖ شَهِيدٌ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكُمْ ۚ وَأُوحِيَ إِلَيَّ هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنُ لِأُنذِرَكُم بِهِ وَمَن بَلَغَ ۚ أَئِنَّكُمْ لَتَشْهَدُونَ أَنَّ مَعَ اللَّهِ آلِهَةً أُخْرَىٰ ۚ قُل لَّا أَشْهَدُ ۚ قُلْ إِنَّمَا هُوَ إِلَٰهٌ وَاحِدٌ وَإِنَّنِي بَرِيءٌ مِّمَّا تُشْرِكُونَ}
