"And thus do We detail the verses..."

It is read: wa-li-tastabīna (and that it may become clear) with both the tā’ and the yā’, with al-sabīlu (the way) in the nominative case, because it [the word sabīl] can be treated as either masculine or feminine.

It is also read with the tā’ as an address to the Messenger, with al-sabīla (the way) in the accusative case. It is said: istabāna al-amru and tabayyana (the matter became clear), and istabantuhu and tabayyantuhu (I made it clear).

The meaning is: Just as this clear detailing is, We detail the verses of the Qur’an and summarize them regarding the states of the criminals:

  • He whose heart is sealed, from whom Islam is not to be hoped for.
  • He in whom one sees signs of acceptance, who is the one that fears when he hears the mention of the Resurrection.
  • He who has entered into Islam, yet does not observe its limits.

So that their way may become clear to you, and you may treat each of them as they ought to be treated, We have detailed that detailing.

"Say, 'Indeed, I have been forbidden to worship those you call upon besides Allah.' Say, 'I will not follow your desires, for I would then have gone astray, and I would not be among the guided.'

Say, 'Indeed, I am upon clear evidence from my Lord, and you have denied it. I do not have that for which you are impatient. The decision is only for Allah. He relates the truth, and He is the best of deciders.'

Say, 'If I had that for which you are impatient, the matter would have been decided between me and you. And Allah is most knowing of the wrongdoers.'"
