And this is a Book which We have sent down, blessed and confirming what was before it, that you may warn the Mother of Cities and those around it. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in it, and they are maintaining their prayers.

Al-An'am: 92

{Blessed} Abundant in benefits and advantages.

{And that you may warn} This is conjoined to what is implied by the description of the Book. It is as if it were said: "We have sent it down for blessings, for the confirmation of the scriptures that preceded it, and for warning." It is also recited as li-yundhira (that he may warn) and li-tundhira (that you may warn).

{The Mother of Cities (Umm al-Qura)} Mecca is called "The Mother of Cities" because it is the location of the first house established for mankind, and because it is the qibla (direction of prayer) for all the villages and the place of their pilgrimage. It is the greatest of cities in status, as one of the poets who lived nearby said: Whoever casts his baggage in the villages, Then the Mother of Cities is the place where I cast my baggage and my destination.

{And those who believe in the Hereafter} They affirm the final outcome and fear it.

{They believe in it} Meaning, they believe in this Book. This is because the foundation of religion is the fear of the final outcome; whoever fears it, that fear will not cease until he believes.

{And they observe their prayers} Prayer is singled out because it is the pillar of religion. Whoever guards it, it serves as a grace (lutf) in guarding its counterparts.

{And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allah or says, "It has been inspired to me," while nothing has been inspired to him, and one who says, "I will reveal [something] like what Allah revealed." And if you could but see when the wrongdoers are in the overwhelming pangs of death while the angels extend their hands, [saying], "Discharge your souls! Today you will be awarded the punishment of [extreme] humiliation for what you used to say against Allah other than the truth and [because] you were, toward His verses, being arrogant.}
