"And it is He who produced you..."

Whoever reads the qaf in mustaqarr with a fatḥah (mustaqar), then mustawdaʿ is a noun of place like it, or an infinitive (maṣdar). Whoever reads it with a kasrah (mustaqirr), then it is an active participle (ism fāʿil), and mustawdaʿ is a passive participle (ism mafʿūl).

The meaning is: You have a place of settlement (mustaqarr) in the womb and a place of deposit (mustawdaʿ) in the loins; or a place of settlement upon the earth and a place of deposit beneath it; or some of you are in a state of settlement and some are in a state of deposit.

If you ask: Why is "they know" (yaʿlamūn) used with the mention of the stars, while "they understand" (yafqahūn) is used with the mention of the creation of the children of Adam?

I say: The creation of humanity from a single soul and their transformation through various states is more subtle, precise in craftsmanship, and deliberate in arrangement. Therefore, the mention of fiqh (understanding)—which is the employment of sagacity and the refinement of observation—is appropriate for it.

"And it is He who sent down rain from the sky, and We brought forth thereby the growth of all things. We brought forth from it greenery from which We produce grain arranged in layers. And from the palm trees—of its emerging fruit are clusters hanging low. And [We produce] gardens of grapevines and olives and pomegranates, similar yet varied. Look at its fruit when it yields and [at] its ripening. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe."
