Tafsir
Verse range: 60:7
When these verses were revealed: The believers intensified their enmity toward their fathers, sons, and all their relatives among the polytheists, cutting off ties with them. When Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He) saw their earnestness and patience in this severe state, and their long-held desire for a reason that would permit them to show friendship and maintain relations, He had mercy on them. He promised them the facilitation of what they had hoped for. When He facilitated the Conquest of Mecca, He granted them their wish; their people embraced Islam, and the love and reconciliation that followed took place.
It is also said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) married Umm Habiba, the temperament of Abu Sufyan softened, and his resolve in enmity relaxed. Umm Habiba had embraced Islam and migrated with her husband, Abdullah ibn Jahsh, to Abyssinia. There, he converted to Christianity and tried to force her to do the same, but she refused and remained steadfast in her religion. When her husband died, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent to the Negus to propose to her on his behalf, and he provided her dowry of four hundred dinars. When this reached her father, he said: "That is a stallion whose nose cannot be curbed."
"It may be" ('asa): This is a promise from Allah, following the custom of kings who, when speaking of certain needs, say "it may be" or "perhaps," leaving no doubt for the one in need that it will be fulfilled. Alternatively, it is intended to give hope to the believers, for Allah is capable of turning hearts, changing circumstances, and facilitating the causes of affection. "And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful."
{ Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes - from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly. * Allah only forbids you from those who fight you because of religion and expel you from your homes and aid in your expulsion - [forbids] that you make allies of them. And whoever makes allies of them, then it is those who are the wrongdoers. }
