Al-Munafiqun: (9) O you who have believed...

{Do not let divert you} Do not let occupy you:

{Your wealth} And the managing of it, the striving to arrange its affairs, the excessive eagerness to seek its growth through trade and profit, the pursuit of its yield, the taking of pleasure in it, and the enjoyment of its benefits.

{And not your children} And your joy in them, your affection for them, the undertaking of their expenses, and the securing of their livelihoods during your life and after your death. You have already known the measure of the benefit of wealth and children, and that it is the most trivial and base thing compared to what is with Allah.

{From the remembrance of Allah} And preferring Him over them.

{And whoever does that} Meaning: being occupied with the worldly life to the neglect of religion.

{Then it is they who are the losers} In their trade, for they have sold the Great and Everlasting for the Trivial and Perishing.

  • It is said: "Remembrance of Allah" means the five daily prayers.
  • From al-Hasan: It means all obligatory duties; as if He said: "from the obedience of Allah."
  • It is said: It means the Qur’an.
  • From al-Kalbi: It means Jihad alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).

{And spend from what We have provided you before death approaches one of you and he says, "My Lord, if only You would delay me for a brief term so I would give charity and be among the righteous." But never will Allah delay a soul when its time has come. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do.}
