At-Taḥrīm: (9) O Prophet...

{Jāhid al-kuffār} (Strive against the disbelievers) with the sword, {wa-l-munāfiqīn} (and the hypocrites) with argumentation. Employ harshness and severity against both groups in the manner by which you strive against them, whether through combat or debate.

  • Qatādah said: Striving against the hypocrites is by establishing the prescribed punishments (ḥudūd) upon them.
  • Mujāhid said: By way of threats.
  • It is also said: By exposing their secrets.

{Ḍaraba Allāhu mathalan li-lladhīna kafarū imra’ata Nūḥin wa-imra’ata Lūṭin, kānatā taḥta ‘abdayni min ‘ibādinā ṣāliḥayni fa-khānatahumā fa-lam yughniyā ‘anhumā mina Allāhi shay’an wa-qīla udkhulā an-nāra ma‘a ad-dākhilīn}

(God sets forth an example for those who disbelieve: the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot. They were under two of Our righteous servants, yet they betrayed them. So they [the husbands] availed them nothing against God, and it was said: "Enter the Fire with those who enter.")
