Al-Mulk: (28) Say, "Have you considered..."

The disbelievers of Mecca used to pray for the destruction of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and the believers.

Allah commanded him to say to them: "We are believers, awaiting one of the two best outcomes: either we perish as you wish, in which case we return to Paradise; or we are shown mercy through victory and the triumph of Islam, as we hope.

But what will you do? Who will protect you from the punishment of the Fire while you are disbelievers? You cannot escape it."

This means: You seek for us a 'destruction' that is actually a hastening toward success and happiness, while you are in a state that is the true destruction—after which there is no other—yet you are heedless and do not seek salvation from it.

Or it means: If Allah destroys us through death, who will protect you after the death of your guides who hold you back from the Fire? And if we are shown mercy through respite, victory over you, and your defeat, who will protect you then? For whoever is killed at our hands is destroyed.

Or it means: If Allah destroys us in the Hereafter for our sins while we are Muslims, who will protect the disbelievers, who are more deserving of destruction due to their disbelief? And if we are shown mercy through faith, who will protect those who have no faith?

{ Say, "He is the Most Merciful; we have believed in Him, and upon Him we have relied. And you will come to know who it is that is in clear error." }
