Tafsir of Al-Mulk 67:5

{The nearest (al-dunyā)}: The closest, because it is the heaven nearest to the people. Its meaning is: the heaven that is closest to you.

{And lamps (maṣābīḥ)}: Lanterns. The stars are named as such because people decorate their mosques and houses with the light of lamps. Thus, it is said: "We have decorated the ceiling of the house in which you have gathered with lamps," meaning: with lamps whose illumination your lamps cannot match.

We have added other benefits to this: {And We have made them as missiles (rujūman) for} your enemies: for {the devils} who lead you out of the light into the darkness, while you are guided by these stars in the darkness of land and sea.

Qatadah said: "Allah created the stars for three purposes: as an adornment for the heaven, as missiles against the devils, and as signs by which to be guided." Whoever interprets them otherwise has burdened himself with that of which he has no knowledge.

From Muhammad ibn Ka‘b: "By Allah, no one on earth has a star in the heaven [assigned to them]. Rather, they seek divination and use the stars as a pretext."

{Missiles (rujūm)}: The plural of rajm, which is a verbal noun used to name that with which one is pelted. The meaning of them being missiles for the devils is that the shooting stars that descend to strike those among them who eavesdrop are separated from the fire of the stars, not that they are pelted with the stars themselves; for the stars remain fixed in their celestial sphere as they are. This is like a torch taken from a fire, while the fire remains fixed and complete, not diminishing.

It is said: Among the pelted devils, some are killed by the shooting star, and some are driven mad.

It is also said: Its meaning is that We have made them conjectures and missiles of the unseen for the devils of mankind, who are the astrologers.

{And We have prepared for them the punishment of the Blaze (al-sa‘īr)}: In the Hereafter, following the punishment of burning by the shooting stars in this world.

{And for those who disbelieved in their Lord is the punishment of Hell, and wretched is the destination. When they are thrown into it, they hear from it a [dreadful] inhaling while it boils up. It almost bursts with rage. Every time a company is thrown into it, its keepers ask them, "Did there not come to you a warner?" They will say, "Yes, a warner had come to us, but we denied and said, 'Allah has not sent down anything. You are not but in great error.'" And they will say, "If only we had been listening or reasoning, we would not be among the companions of the Blaze." So they will admit their sin, so [it is] alienation for the companions of the Blaze. Indeed, those who fear their Lord unseen will have forgiveness and great reward.}
