Tafsir
Verse range: 69:25-29
"As for him who is given..."
{O, would that it had been the end!} The pronoun in "it" refers to the [first] death. He says: "Would that the death which I experienced had been the final one, cutting off my affairs, so that I would not have been resurrected after it, nor encountered what I am now encountering."
Alternatively, it refers to his current state: "Would that this state had been the death that finished me," because he saw that state as more hideous and bitter than the bitterness and severity of death he had tasted, so he wished for death at that moment.
{My wealth has not availed me} A negation or an interrogative used for denial. It means: "What thing has my wealth availed me?"
{My authority has perished from me} My kingdom and my power over people have vanished, and I have remained poor and humiliated.
Ibn ʿAbbās said: This was revealed regarding al-Aswad ibn ʿAbd al-Asad.
It is narrated regarding Fana-Khusraw, titled "al-ʿAḍud" (ʿAḍud al-Dawla), that when he said: The arm of the state and the pillar of its corner, King of kings, conqueror of fate. He did not prosper after that; he went insane, and his tongue would utter nothing but this verse.
Ibn ʿAbbās also said: "My proof has strayed from me." Its meaning is: "The argument I used to employ in the world has been invalidated."
{Take him and shackle him. Then into the Hellfire, cast him. Then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits, insert him. Indeed, he did not believe in Allah, the Most Great. Nor did he encourage the feeding of the poor. So there is no close friend for him here this day. Nor any food except from the filth of wounds. None will eat it except the sinners.}
