ﲉ ﲊ ﲋ ﲌ ﲍ ﲎ ﲏ ﲐ ﲑ ﲒ ﲓ ﲔ ﲕ ﲖ ﲗ ﲘ ﲙ ﲚ ﲛ ﲜ ﲝ ﲞ ﲟ ﲠ ﲡ
Those cities - We relate to you, [O Muhammad], some of their news. And certainly did their messengers come to them with clear proofs, but they were not to believe in that which they had denied before. Thus does Allah seal over the hearts of the disbelievers.

Verse range: 7:101
[Grammatical Analysis] It is like the saying: {هذا بعلي شيخاً} (Hud: 72), in that it consists of a subject (mubtada’), a predicate (khabar), and a state (hal). It is also permissible for {القرى} to be an adjective for {تلك}, and {نقص} to be the predicate. It is also possible for {القرى} and {نقص} to be consecutive predicates.
[Question] If you ask: What is the meaning of {تلك القرى} such that it constitutes a complete, beneficial statement?
[Answer] I say: It is beneficial, but on the condition of being restricted by the state (hal), just as it is beneficial when restricted by an adjective in your saying: "He is the noble man."
[Question] If you ask: What is the meaning of informing about the villages that "We relate to you some of their news"?
[Answer] I say: Its meaning is that those mentioned villages—We relate to you some of their news, while they possess other news that We have not related to you.
When the messengers came with clear proofs, they would not believe in what they had already denied of God’s signs before the messengers arrived. Or, it means they would not believe until the end of their lives in what they had denied when the messengers first came to them. That is, they persisted in denial from the moment the messengers arrived until they died, remaining insistent, neither refraining nor softening their resolve in their disbelief and stubbornness, despite the repetition of admonitions and the succession of signs.
The meaning of the lam (in li-yu’minu) is to emphasize the negation, indicating that faith was fundamentally incompatible with their state of determination to disbelieve. Mujahid said: It is like His saying: {ولو ردوا لعادوا لما نهوا عنه} (Al-An'am: 28).
