Surah Al-A'raf 7:125

ﱩ ﱪ ﱫ ﱬ ﱭ

They said, "Indeed, to our Lord we will return.

Al-Aʿrāf: 125

{Indeed, we are to our Lord returning.} There are several interpretations for this:

  1. They mean: We do not care about death, for we are returning to meet our Lord, His mercy, and our deliverance from you and your meeting.
  2. We return to Allah on the Day of Recompense, so He will reward us for the hardships of being cut and crucified.
  3. We—meaning themselves and Pharaoh—are all returning to Allah, so He will judge between us.
  4. We are inevitably dying and returning to Allah, so you can only do to us what is unavoidable.

{And you do not resent us except because we believed} Meaning: You do not find fault in us except for believing in the signs of Allah. They meant: You do not find fault in us except for that which is the root of all virtues and glories, which is faith. From this is the saying: And there is no fault in them, except that their swords...

{Pour upon us patience} Grant us vast patience and bestow it upon us abundantly, until it overflows and covers us, just as water is poured out. It is narrated from some of the predecessors: "One of you might pour a bucket of water over his brother, then say: 'I was only joking with you,'" meaning he overwhelms him with shame and embarrassment. Or, it means: Pour upon us that which cleanses us from the filth of sins, which is patience regarding what Pharaoh has threatened us with, for they knew that if they remained steadfast and patient, it would be a purification for them.

{And cause us to die as Muslims} Steadfast upon Islam.


{And the eminent among the people of Pharaoh said, "Will you leave Moses and his people to cause corruption in the land and abandon you and your gods?" [Pharaoh] said, "We will kill their sons and keep their women alive; and indeed, we are over them, subjugators."}
