Indeed, those who took the calf [for worship] will obtain anger from their Lord and humiliation in the life of this world, and thus do We recompense the inventors [of falsehood].

Verse range: 7:152
{Wrath from their Lord and humiliation} The "wrath" refers to what they were commanded to do: killing their own selves. The "humiliation" refers to their expulsion from their homes, for the humiliation of exile is a proverbial example. It is also said: it refers to what befell their descendants—the Banū Qurayẓah and Banū al-Naḍīr—in terms of God Almighty’s wrath through killing and banishment, and in terms of humiliation through the imposition of the jizyah (poll tax).
{The fabricators} Those who lie about God. There is no fabrication greater than the statement of the Samiri: "This is your god and the god of Moses."
It is permissible for "in the life of this world" to be linked to "humiliation" alone. The meaning would be: They shall have wrath in the Hereafter, and humiliation in the life of this world, as in [the verse]: "Humiliation and wretchedness were struck upon them, and they returned with wrath from God."
{But those who committed evil deeds, then repented after them and believed—indeed, your Lord, after that, is Forgiving, Merciful.}
