Tafsir of Al-A'raf 7:199

{Take to forgiveness} Al-ʿafw (forgiveness/ease) is the opposite of al-jahd (strenuousness). It means: accept what comes easily to you of people’s actions and characters, and what comes from them naturally and easily without burden. Do not be overly precise with them, and do not demand from them strenuousness or what is difficult for them, so that they do not turn away. This is like his (peace be upon him) saying: "Make things easy and do not make them difficult."

It is said in poetry: Accept the ease from me, and you will sustain my affection, And do not speak during my outburst when I am angry.

It is also said: Take the surplus and what is easily given of their charity. This was before the revelation of the Zakat verse; when it was revealed, he was commanded to take it from them, whether willingly or unwillingly.

{And enjoin the ʿurf} Al-ʿurf is what is known (good) and beautiful in actions.

{And turn away from the ignorant} Do not requite the foolish with the likes of their foolishness, do not argue with them, be forbearing toward them, and suppress your anger regarding what displeases you from them.

It is said: When this verse was revealed, the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked Gabriel, "What is this?" He replied, "I do not know until I ask." Then he returned and said, "O Muhammad, your Lord commands you to join those who cut you off, give to those who deprive you, and forgive those who wrong you."

Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq said: God commanded His Prophet (peace be upon him) with noble character, and there is no verse in the Qur’an more comprehensive of noble character than this one.

{And if an evil suggestion from Satan comes to you, then seek refuge in God; indeed, He is Hearing, Knowing.}
