Tafsir of Al-A'raf 7:23

"They said, 'Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves...'"

They termed their sin—even though it was minor and forgiven—a "wronging of themselves." They said, "We will surely be among the losers," following the custom of the saints and the righteous in regarding their minor misdeeds as grave, while regarding their great good deeds as insignificant.

"[Allah] said, 'Descend, being to one another enemies. And for you on the earth is a place of settlement and enjoyment for a time. He said, 'Therein you will live, and therein you will die, and from it you will be brought forth.'"
