Al-Aʿrāf: 3

{اتبعوا ما أنزل إليكم} From the Qur’an and the Sunnah.

{ولا تتبعوا من دونه أولياء} Meaning: Do not follow, besides Him—that is, besides Allah—any allies, such as the devils among jinn and mankind. They will incite you to worship idols, follow whims and innovations, and lead you astray from the religion of Allah and what He has revealed to you and commanded you to follow.

Al-Hasan said: "O son of Adam, you have been commanded to follow the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of Muhammad (peace be upon him). By Allah, no verse was ever revealed except that He loves for you to know why it was revealed and what its meaning is."

Malik ibn Dinar recited: {ولا تبتغوا} (Do not seek), from the root al-ibtighā’ (seeking), as in: {ومن يبتغ غير الإسلام دينا} (And whoever seeks a religion other than Islam [Al-Imran: 85]).

It is also possible that the pronoun in {من دونه} refers to "what was revealed," meaning: "Do not follow, besides the religion of Allah, the religion of allies."

{قليلا ما تذكرون} Where you abandon the religion of Allah and follow another.

  • Readings: It is read as {تذكرون} (you remember) by omitting the tā’, and as {ويتذكرون} (they remember) with a yā’.
  • Grammar: {قليلا} is in the accusative case as an object of tadhakkurūn (you remember), meaning: "You remember only a little." The {مآ} is an augmentative particle used to emphasize the scarcity.

Al-Aʿrāf: 4

{وكم من قرية أهلكناها فجآءها بأسنا بياتا أو هم قآئلون}
