Surah Al-A'raf 7:5
ﱬ ﱭ ﱮ ﱯ ﱰ ﱱ ﱲ ﱳ ﱴ ﱵ ﱶ ﱷ
And their declaration when Our punishment came to them was only that they said, "Indeed, we were wrongdoers!"

{فما كان دعواهم} Their claim—that is, what they used to profess of their religion and adopt of their school of thought—was nothing but their admission of its falsehood and corruption, and their saying: {إنا كنا ظالمين} (We were indeed wrongdoers) in what we were upon.
It is also permissible that their "calling out" (for help) was nothing but this statement of theirs, because there is no one to call upon against God other than Him. This is derived from the expression: "His call was: 'O Kaʿb!'"
It is also permissible that their "calling upon" their Lord was nothing but their admission, because they knew that supplication would not benefit them, and that it was not the time for supplication. Thus, they did not add anything beyond blaming themselves and expressing regret for what they had done.
{دعواهم} is the accusative predicate of kāna, and {أن قالوا} is the nominative subject of it; the reverse is also permissible.
{فلنسألن الذين أرسل إليهم ولنسألن المرسلين * فلنقصن عليهم بعلم وما كنا غآئبين}
