And the companions of the Fire will call to the companions of Paradise, "Pour upon us some water or from whatever Allah has provided you." They will say, "Indeed, Allah has forbidden them both to the disbelievers."

{Pour upon us} This contains evidence that Paradise is above the Fire.

{or from what Allah has provided for you} This refers to other drinks, as they fall under the ruling of "pouring." It is also possible that it means: "Cast down to us from what Allah has provided for you of food and fruit." This is like the saying: I fed it straw and cold water.

They only request this, despite their despair of receiving an answer, out of bewilderment regarding their state, just as a distressed and tested person would do.

{Allah has forbidden them both to the disbelievers} He has withheld from them the drink and food of Paradise, just as one withholds from a person under obligation that which is forbidden to him and warned against. This is like the saying: It is forbidden for my eyes to taste slumber.

{So today We will forget them} We will treat them as those who forget treat their servants, by withholding good from them and not remembering them with it.

{just as they forgot the meeting of this Day of theirs} Just as they acted toward meeting this Day like those who forget, for they did not let it cross their minds nor did they concern themselves with it.

{And We had certainly brought them a Book which We detailed by knowledge - as guidance and mercy to a people who believe. Do they await except its fulfillment? The Day its fulfillment comes, those who had forgotten it before will say, "The messengers of our Lord had certainly come with the truth, so are there for us any intercessors to intercede for us or could we be sent back to do other than what we used to do?" They will have lost themselves, and lost from them is what they used to invent.}
