Tafsir of Al-A'raf 7:54

Surah Al-A'raf 7:54

ﱵ ﱶ ﱷ ﱸ ﱹ ﱺ ﱻ ﱼ ﱽ ﱾ ﱿ ﲀ ﲁ ﲂ ﲃ ﲄ ﲅ ﲆ ﲇ ﲈ ﲉ ﲊ ﲋ ﲌ ﲍ ﲎ ﲏ ﲐ ﲑ ﲒ ﲓ ﲔ ﲕ ﲖ ﲗ

Indeed, your Lord is Allah, who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He covers the night with the day, [another night] chasing it rapidly; and [He created] the sun, the moon, and the stars, subjected by His command. Unquestionably, His is the creation and the command; blessed is Allah, Lord of the worlds.

Al-Aʿrāf: 54

{يُغْشِي} It is read as yughshī (with a shadda), meaning: He makes the night cover the day, or the day cover the night; it admits both meanings. The evidence for the second is the reading of Humayd ibn Qays: yaghshā al-laylu al-nahāra (the night covers the day), with a fatḥa on the yāʾ, the layl in the accusative, and the nahār in the nominative. This means: the night overtakes the day and pursues it swiftly, which is highly consistent with Humayd’s reading.

{بِأَمْرِهِ} By His will and His directing. It is connected to musakhkharāt (subjected/subservient), meaning: He created them moving according to the requirements of His wisdom and management, just as He wills to direct them. This is called an "order" (amr) by way of analogy, as if they were commanded to do so.

It is also read as: wa-al-shamsu wa-al-qamaru wa-al-nujūmu musakhkharātun (in the nominative). When He mentioned that He created them subjected by His command, He said:

{أَلَا لَهُ الْخَلْقُ وَالْأَمْرُ} Meaning: He is the One who created all things, and He is the One who directs them according to His will.
