Al-Aʿrāf: 63

{أو عجبتم} The hamza is for denial (inkār), and the wāw is for conjunction (ʿaṭf). The element to which it is conjoined is omitted, as if it were said: "Did you disbelieve and wonder?"

{أن جاءكم} Meaning: "at the fact that there has come to you."

{ذكر} An exhortation (mawʿiẓa).

{من ربكم على رجل منكم} By the tongue of a man from among you, similar to His saying: "what You promised us through Your messengers" (Āl ʿImrān: 194). This is because they wondered at the prophethood of Noah (peace be upon him) and said: "We have not heard of this among our forefathers," meaning the sending of a human being. They would say: "Had our Lord willed, He would have sent down angels."

{لينذركم ولتتقوا} To warn you of the consequences of disbelief, and to bring about piety (taqwā) in you, which is fear (khashya) resulting from the warning.

{ولعلكم ترحمون} And so that you may be shown mercy through piety, if it is found in you.

{فكذبوه فأنجيناه والذين معه في الفلك وأغرقنا الذين كذبوا بأاياتنآ إنهم كانوا قوما عمين}
