Surah Al-A'raf 7:93
ﲫ ﲬ ﲭ ﲮ ﲯ ﲰ ﲱ ﲲ ﲳ ﲴ ﲵ ﲶ ﲷ ﲸ ﲹ ﲺ
And he turned away from them and said, "O my people, I had certainly conveyed to you the messages of my Lord and advised you, so how could I grieve for a disbelieving people?"

"Then he turned away from them and said..."
Al-Asā (الأسى): Intense grief. Al-ʿAjjāj said: "And his eyes streamed from the excess of grief."
He felt intense grief for his people, then he rebuked himself, saying: "How can I feel intense grief for a people who are not worthy of grief due to their disbelief and their deserving of what has befallen them?"
It is also possible he meant: "I have offered you my excuses in conveying the message, advising, and warning you of what has befallen you, yet you did not listen to my words nor believe me. So how can I grieve for you?" This means he does not grieve for them because they are not deserving of grief.
Yaḥyā ibn Waththāb read it as: (fa-kayfa īsā), with a kasra on the hamza.
"And We did not send a prophet to any town but that We seized its people with poverty and hardship so that they might humble themselves. Then We replaced the bad [condition] with the good until they increased [in number and wealth] and said, 'Our fathers were touched by hardship and ease.' So We seized them suddenly while they were unaware."
