And leave Me with [the matter of] the deniers, those of ease [in life], and allow them respite a little.

Al-Muzzammil: 11 **"And leave Me with the deniers, those of ease..."**

When a man knows that his companion is distressed by a matter he wishes to resolve, or by an enemy he desires to take vengeance upon, and he (the companion) is capable and powerful enough to handle it, he says: "Leave me and him."

This means: "You do not need to exert yourself to achieve your desire; you need only leave him to Me, entrust his affair to Me, and let Me suffice you against him." This is what will clear your mind and relieve your anxiety. There is no actual prevention here that would require a request to "leave him," except for the abandonment of self-sufficiency and the act of delegation. It is as if, by not entrusting the matter to Him, one is preventing Him from acting; but when one entrusts it to Him, the prevention is removed, and He is left with him. This contains evidence of the certainty that He is capable of fulfilling the utmost of what the addressee desires, and even exceeding it.

"Those of ease" (al-na‘mah):

  • Al-na‘mah (with a fatha): Luxury and comfort.
  • Al-ni‘mah (with a kasra): Bestowal of favor.
  • Al-nu‘mah (with a damma): Joy. It is said: "He lived in comfort (na‘ima)." They were the chieftains of Quraysh, people of luxury and indulgence.

"Indeed, with Us are..." Things that contradict their luxury:

  • "Shackles" (ankāl): Heavy chains. According to al-Sha‘bi, if they were to rise, the chains would weigh them down. The singular is nikl.
  • "And a blazing fire" (jahīm): Fire of intense heat and combustion.
  • "And food that chokes" (ta‘ām dhā ghussa): Food that sticks in the throat and cannot be swallowed; meaning al-darī‘ (bitter, thorny plant) and the tree of Zaqqūm.
  • "And a painful punishment" (‘adhāb alīm): From all other forms of torment. You will not find anyone to whom their affair is entrusted, nor anyone left between Him and them, who could take vengeance upon them with such vengeance.

It is narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) recited this verse and fell unconscious.

It is narrated from al-Hasan that he was fasting one evening, and food was brought to him. This verse occurred to him, so he said, "Take it away." It was placed before him the second night, and it occurred to him again, so he said, "Take it away." The same happened on the third night. Thabit al-Bunani, Yazid al-Dabbi, and Yahya al-Bukka’ were informed, so they came and did not cease until he drank a sip of sawīq (barley drink).

"The Day the earth and the mountains will shake" (yawma tarjufu):

  • Yawma is in the accusative case (mansūb) due to the meaning in "with Us" (ladaynā).
  • Al-rajfah: The violent earthquake.
  • Al-kathīb: Accumulated sand. It comes from kathaba (to gather something), as if it were fa‘īl in the sense of maf‘ūl (passive participle) in its origin. From this comes al-kathbah of milk. The ewe-herder said: "I shear the thick wool and milk the quick, gathered portions," meaning it was like sand gathered and then poured out (hīlan), meaning scattered and flowed.

Al-Muzzammil: 15 **"Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness upon you, just as We sent to Pharaoh a messenger. But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure."**
