Al-Anfal: (28) "And know that your wealth..."

"And know that your wealth and your children are a trial"

Wealth and children are designated as a fitna (trial) because they are the cause of falling into fitna, which is sin or punishment.

Alternatively, it means a test from Allah to see how you uphold His limits regarding them.

"And that Allah has with Him a great reward"

You must attach your aspirations to seeking this reward and to what leads to it. You should be ascetic regarding the worldly life and not be greedy in accumulating wealth or obsessed with the love of children, lest you entangle yourselves in ruin for their sake, as in His saying: "Wealth and children are the adornment of the life of this world" (Al-Kahf: 46).

It is also said: This is among what was revealed concerning Abu Lubaba and the negligence he committed for the sake of his wealth and children.

(29) "O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty."
