[Remember] when the hypocrites and those in whose hearts was disease said, "Their religion has deluded those [Muslims]." But whoever relies upon Allah - then indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.

Al-Anfal: 49

{ إذ يقول المنافقون } In Medina.

{ والذين في قلوبهم مرض } It is permissible that this is an attribute of the hypocrites, or that it refers to those who are on the edge [of faith], not firmly established in Islam. Al-Hasan said: They are the polytheists.

{ غر هؤلاء دينهم } They mean that the Muslims were deluded by their religion, believing they would be strengthened and aided by it. Thus, they went out—numbering three hundred and some odd men—against nearly a thousand.

{ ومن يتوكل على الله فإن الله عزيز } He is the All-Mighty, the Overcomer, who empowers the few and weak over the many and strong.

Al-Anfal: 50-51

{ ولو ترى إذ يتوفى الذين كفروا الملائكة يضربون وجوههم وأدبارهم وذوقوا عذاب الحريق * ذالك بما قدمت أيديكم وأن الله ليس بظلام للعبيد }
