Al-Anfal: (6) "They dispute with you concerning the truth..."

"Concerning the truth" The truth they disputed with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) about was the encounter with the mobilization (the army of Quraysh), because they preferred encountering the caravan instead.

"After it had become clear" This means after the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) had informed them that they would be granted victory.

Their dispute Their dispute was their saying: "Our departure was only for the caravan; why did you not tell us so that we could prepare and equip ourselves?" This was due to their aversion to fighting.

The simile of their state He then likens their state—in their extreme panic and terror while being led toward victory and spoils—to the state of one being driven to slaughter, dragged in humiliation toward a certain death, witnessing its causes and looking upon them without any doubt.

Another view It is said that their fear was due to their small numbers and the fact that they were infantry. It is narrated that there were only two horsemen among them.

(7) "And [remember] when Allah promised you one of the two groups—that it would be yours—and you wished that the unarmed one would be yours, while Allah intended to establish the truth by His words and to cut off the roots of the disbelievers."
