Tafsir
Verse range: 8:62-63
{فَإِنَّ حَسْبَكَ اللَّهُ} It means: Allah is your sufficient protector (muḥasbuka). Jarīr said: “I found that among your noble traits is that you wear silk garments and eat your fill.”
{وَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِهِمْ} The reconciliation of the hearts of those to whom the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was sent is among the most dazzling signs. This is because the Arabs, due to their intense pride, tribal fanaticism, and tendency to harbor grudges over the slightest matter—keeping them in sight until they take revenge—could hardly ever have two hearts unite.
Yet, their hearts united in following the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). They became one, shooting from a single bow. This occurred because Allah organized their harmony, gathered their word, created love and affection between them, removed hatred and enmity from them, and bound them to love for the sake of Allah and hate for the sake of Allah. None can accomplish this except the One who possesses the hearts; He turns them as He wills and fashions in them what He desires.
It is also said: This refers to the Aws and the Khazraj. Between them were wars and battles that destroyed their leaders and chiefs and crushed their skulls. Their hatred had no limit or end, and they lived in proximity, which stirs up grudges and sustains envy and rivalry. It is the custom of any two groups in such a state that one avoids, dislikes, and recoils from whatever the other prefers.
However, Allah Almighty made them forget all of that until they agreed upon obedience, became sincere toward one another, became Anṣār (Helpers), and turned into allies. This was only through His subtle craftsmanship and profound power.
{يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ حَسْبُكَ اللَّهُ وَمَنِ اتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ}
