Tafsir of At-Takweer 81:15

{فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالْخُنَّسِ}

{الخُنَّس}: The retrograding ones. You see a star at the end of a constellation, then it turns back, returning to its beginning.

{الْجَوَارِ}: The planets.

{الْجَوَارِ الْكُنَّسِ}: Those that disappear. It is derived from the kinās (lair) of a wild animal: when it enters its lair.

It is said: These are the five wandering stars—Mars, Saturn, Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter. They travel with the sun and the moon, then retrograde until they are hidden beneath the light of the sun. Their khunūs (retreat) is their retrogradation, and their kunūs (hiding) is their disappearance beneath the sun's light.

It is also said: These are all the stars. They retreat during the day, disappearing from sight, and they "lair" at night—meaning they appear in their places like wild animals in their lairs.

{عَسْعَسَ}: The night ‘as‘asa—meaning it departed. Al-‘Ajjaj said: Until the morning breathed for it, And its night cleared away and departed (wa-‘as‘asa).

It is also said: ‘As‘asa means when its darkness approached.

If you ask: What is the meaning of "the morning breathed"? I say: When the morning approaches, it brings with it a spirit and a breeze, so this is metaphorically called its "breath."

{إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ * ذِي قُوَّةٍ عِنْدَ ذِي الْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍ * مُطَاعٍ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ}
