So where are you going?
Tafsir
Verse range: 81:26
{So where are you going?} This is a way of declaring them to be in error. It is like what is said to someone who abandons the main road to wander aimlessly or take side paths: "Where are you going?"
Their state is likened to his state in their abandonment of the truth and their deviation from it toward falsehood.
{For whoever among you wills} This is a substitute (badal) for "the worlds" (al-‘alamin). They were singled out as a substitute because those who will uprightness by entering Islam are the ones who benefit from the Reminder. It is as if no one else was admonished by it, even though they were all admonished.
{And you do not will} Uprightness, O you who will it, except by the success granted by Allah and His grace.
Alternatively: You do not will it, O you who do not will it, except by the compulsion and coercion of Allah.
From the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): "Whoever recites Surah Idha al-shamsu kuwwirat (When the sun is wrapped up), Allah will protect him from being disgraced when his scroll is spread open."
