Indeed, the vengeance of your Lord is severe.
Tafsir
Verse range: 85:12
"Indeed, the seizing of your Lord..." Al-Batsh (the seizing) is taking someone with violence. When it is described as "severe," it becomes multiplied and aggravated. This is His seizing of the tyrants and the oppressors, taking them with punishment and retribution.
"Indeed, it is He who originates and repeats." Meaning: He originates the seizing and repeats it. That is, He seizes them in this world and in the Hereafter. Alternatively, by His power to originate and repeat, He indicates the severity of His seizing. He threatens the disbelievers that He will repeat them [in creation] just as He originated them, in order to seize them, since they did not thank Him for the blessing of origination and denied the repetition [of creation]. It is also read as yabda’u (originates).
"The Loving One" The One who acts toward the people of His obedience as a loving person acts: by giving them what they desire.
"Owner of the Throne" Read as an adjective for "your Lord."
"The Glorious" Read in the genitive case (al-majidi) as an adjective for "the Throne." The glory of God is His greatness, and the glory of the Throne is its loftiness and greatness.
"Effecter of what He wills" The predicate of an omitted subject. It is said fa‘āl (Effecter/Doer) because what He wills and does is of the utmost frequency.
"Has there reached you the story of the soldiers? Pharaoh and Thamud? But those who disbelieve are in denial. And Allah is encompassing them from behind. But this is a glorious Qur’an, in a Preserved Tablet."
