No! But you do not honor the orphan
Tafsir
Verse range: 89:17
{Nay}: A rebuke to man for his saying [previously mentioned]. Then He says: {Nay}, there is a greater evil than that statement. It is:
That God honors them with an abundance of wealth, yet they do not fulfill what is required of them regarding it—such as honoring the orphan through care and kindness, and urging one another to feed the poor.
{And you devour the inheritance, devouring it greedily}: They devour it like cattle, loving it and being stingy with it.
{Devouring it greedily}: That is, gathering both the lawful and the unlawful. Al-Ḥuṭay’ah said: If one gathers [wealth] and follows it with blame for his Lord, may the Merciful not sanctify those mills.
This means they combine in their consumption their own share of the inheritance with the share of others. It is said: They would not grant inheritance to women or children, and would consume their portions along with their own. It is also said: They consume what the deceased gathered through oppression, and they are aware of that, thus combining in their consumption both the lawful and the unlawful.
It is also permissible that it condemns the heir who obtained the wealth easily and effortlessly, without breaking a sweat, so he spends it extravagantly and consumes it in a vast manner, gathering all sorts of desired foods, drinks, and fruits, just as idle heirs do.
{And you love wealth with intense love}: Much, intense [love], accompanied by greed, gluttony, and the withholding of rights.
{Nay! When the earth is pounded into dust, and your Lord comes, and the angels, rank upon rank, and Hell is brought near that Day—on that Day man will remember, but how will the remembrance avail him? He will say, "Oh, would that I had sent ahead [good deeds] for my life!" So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish, and none will bind as He will bind.}
