Take, [O, Muhammad], from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke [Allah 's blessings] upon them. Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them. And Allah is Hearing and Knowing.

At-Tawbah: 103

{تطهرهم} (You purify them): An adjective describing the sadaqah (charity). It is also recited as (تُطْهِرُهُمْ), from aṭhara, meaning ṭahhara (to purify). And it is recited as (تُطَهِّرْهُمْ), in the jussive mood, as a response to the imperative command. The letter ya in {وتزكيهم} (and you sanctify them) is always retained in recitation. The ta in {تطهرهم} refers to either the second person (you) or the third person feminine (it—the charity).

At-Tazkiyah (Sanctification): An intensive form of purification, or it means growth and blessing in wealth.

{وصل عليهم} (And pray for them): Incline toward them with supplication and mercy. It is the Sunnah for the collector of charity to pray for the giver when receiving it. Al-Shafi‘i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "I like for the authority, upon taking the charity, to say: 'May Allah reward you for what you have given, make it a purification for you, and bless you in what you have kept.'"

It is also recited as (إن صلاتك) in the singular form.

{سكن لهم} (A source of tranquility for them): They find peace in it, and their hearts are reassured that Allah has accepted their repentance.

{والله سميع} (And Allah is All-Hearing): He hears their confession of their sins and their supplications.

{عليم} (All-Knowing): Of what is in their inner selves, and the grief of their remorse for what they have neglected.

{ألم يعلموا أن الله هو يقبل التوبة عن عباده ويأخذ الصدقات وأن الله هو التواب الرحيم}

"Do they not know that it is Allah who accepts repentance from His servants and takes the charities, and that it is Allah who is the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful?"
