Tafsir of At-Tawbah 9:128

{From among yourselves} Meaning: From your own kind and lineage; an Arab, a Qurayshi, just like you. He then mentions the consequences that follow this kinship and affinity by saying:

{It is grievous to him that you should suffer} Meaning: It is intense and difficult for him—because he is a part of you—that you should face hardship or encounter what is detestable. He fears for you an evil outcome and falling into punishment.

{Concerned for you} So that no one among you strays from following him and attaining happiness through the true religion he brought.

{To the believers} Among you and others.

{Kind and merciful} It is read as anfusikum (meaning: from the most noble and excellent among you). It is said that this was the recitation of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), Fatimah, and Aisha (may Allah be pleased with them). It is also said that Allah did not combine two of His own names for anyone other than the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) in His saying: {Kind and merciful}.

{But if they turn away} If they turn away from faith in you and show you hostility, then seek help and entrust the matter to Him. He is sufficient for you against their harm; they will not harm you, and He is your helper against them.

Note: It is read as al-ʿaẓīm (The Tremendous) in the nominative case.

From Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): The Throne (al-ʿArsh) is such that no one can estimate its magnitude.

From Ubayy ibn Kaʿb: The last verse to be revealed was: {There has certainly come to you a Messenger from among yourselves}.

From the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): "The Quran was not revealed to me except verse by verse and letter by letter, except for Surah Bara'ah and Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad, for they were revealed to me accompanied by seventy thousand rows of angels."
