Tafsir
Verse range: 9:43
{عفا الله عنك} This is a metonymy for a transgression, because pardon is synonymous with it. Its meaning is: "You have erred, and evil is what you have done."
{لم أذنت لهم} This is an explanation of what was alluded to by the pardon. Its meaning is: "Why did you grant them permission to stay behind from the military expedition when they asked you and offered their excuses? Why did you not delay the permission {until it becomes clear to you} who was truthful in his excuse and who was lying?"
It is said: There are two things the Messenger of Allah did without being commanded to do so: granting permission to the hypocrites and taking ransom from the captives; so Allah, the Exalted, rebuked him for them.
{لا يستأذنك الذين يؤمنون بالله واليوم الآخر أن يجاهدوا بأموالهم وأنفسهم والله عليم بالمتقين}
