Do they not know that whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger - that for him is the fire of Hell, wherein he will abide eternally? That is the great disgrace.

At-Tawbah: 63

"Do they not know that..."

  • "Al-muḥādāt" (opposing/contending): This is a mufāʿala form derived from al-ḥadd (the boundary/limit), similar to al-mushāqqa (contending) derived from al-shaqq (the split).
  • "For him is..." (fa-inna lahu): This implies an omitted predicate. It means: "It is certain that for him is the fire of Hell."
  • Alternative interpretation: It is said that the meaning is simply "for him is," and the word anna (that) is a repetition because the phrase "that he" (annahu) already contains emphasis.
  • Grammatical possibility: It is permissible that "for him is" (fa-inna lahu) is a conjunction linked to the first "that" (annahu), based on the premise that the answer to the conditional "whoever" (man) is omitted. The implied meaning is: "Do they not know that whoever opposes Allah and His Messenger will perish, and for him is the fire of Hell?"
  • Variant reading: It has been recited as "Do you (plural) not know" (a-lam taʿlamū) with a tāʾ.

At-Tawbah: 64

"The hypocrites fear that a surah may be revealed about them, informing them of what is in their hearts. Say, 'Mock; indeed, Allah will bring to light that which you fear.'"
