At-Tawbah: 70
{And the people of Madyan}
They are the people of Shu‘ayb.
{And the overturned ones (al-mu’tafikāt)}
They are the cities of the people of Lot. It is also said: they are the villages of the people of Lot, Hud, and Salih. Their i’tifāk (overturning) refers to the inversion of their conditions from good to evil.
{And Allah would not have wronged them}
It is not possible for Him to wrong them, for He is Wise, and it is not permissible for Him to commit an ugly act or to punish them without a crime. Rather, they wronged themselves when they disbelieved in Him, thus becoming deserving of His punishment.
At-Tawbah: 71–72
{The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, establish prayer, give zakah, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those—Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. Allah has promised the believing men and believing women gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally, and pleasant dwellings in gardens of perpetual residence; but approval from Allah is greater. It is that which is the great attainment.}
