Surah At-Tawbah 9:93

ﲵ ﲶ ﲷ ﲸ ﲹ ﲺ ﲻ ﲼ ﲽ ﲾ ﲿ ﳀ ﳁ ﳂ ﳃ ﳄ ﳅ ﳆ ﳇ ﳈ ﳉ

The cause [for blame] is only upon those who ask permission of you while they are rich. They are satisfied to be with those who stay behind, and Allah has sealed over their hearts, so they do not know.

At-Tawbah: 93

"The way [of blame] is only against..."

If you ask: What is the grammatical position of {raḍū} (they were pleased)?

I say: It is an isti’nāf (a new, independent sentence). It is as if it were asked: "Why did they seek permission [to stay behind] while they were wealthy?" So, it was answered: They were pleased with baseness, lowliness, and being counted among those who stay behind.

{And Allah has sealed their hearts}: This means the cause of their seeking permission was their contentment with baseness and Allah’s abandonment of them.

If you ask: Is it permissible for the statement {qultu lā ajidu} (I said, "I find no...") to be an isti’nāf like it? As if it were said: "When they came to you to be carried, they turned away." Then it was asked: "Why did they turn away weeping?" And it was answered: "I said, 'I find no [mounts] to carry you upon.'" Except that it is placed between the condition and the response like an i’tirāḍ (parenthetical clause).

I say: Yes, and it is appropriate.

{We will never believe you}: This is the reason for the prohibition against offering excuses. The purpose of the one offering an excuse is to be believed in what they excuse themselves with. Once they know they are being disbelieved, they must cease.

{Allah has already informed us of your news}: This is the reason for the negation of believing them. When Allah, the Almighty and Exalted, reveals to His Messenger information about their news, their conditions, and the evil and corruption hidden in their consciences, it is not consistent with that to believe their excuses.

{And Allah will see your deeds}: Will you repent, or will you persist in your disbelief?

{Then you will be returned}: To Him, and He is the Knower of all that is unseen and witnessed, secret and public, so He will recompense you accordingly.


At-Tawbah: 95

"They will swear by Allah to you when you return to them that you might leave them alone. So leave them alone. Indeed, they are impurity, and their refuge is Hell as recompense for what they used to earn."
